There’s still plenty of introspection and melancholy in Cafiero’s lyrics. But now he’s couching those lyrics in tunes that are overflowing with dreamy, feel-good vibes, hooky, sing-along melodies and funky grooves. Split Screens’ latest release, Before the Storm, is a breezy batch of songs combining wide-ranging influences—’70s-pop radio, Americana, space-rock and classic R&B—into a unified whole that is at once nostalgic and modern.
