When New York singer-songwriter Jesse Cafiero started Split Screens in 2012, his songs were introspective and melancholic (think Bon Iver). There’s still plenty of introspection and melancholy in Cafiero’s lyrics. But now he’s couching those lyrics in tunes that are overflowing with dreamy, feel-good vibes, hooky, sing-along melodies and funky grooves. Split Screens’ latest release, Before the Storm, is a breezy batch of songs combining wide-ranging influences—’70s-pop radio, Americana, space-rock and classic R&B—into a unified whole that is at once nostalgic and modern.
