The Octopus Literary Salon will host three multicultural authors on Thursday, March 15, from 7 pm-9 pm. Ananda Esteva, Michelle Cruz Gonzales, and Maw Shein Win will read from their work, answer questions, and discuss publishing from the point of view of women of color.
Chilean-born Ananda Esteva will launch her young adult adventure, The Wanderings of Chela Coatlicue: Touring Califaztlán (www.transgresspress.org, Feb. 2018), which features a young Latina leading her bandmates on a dangerous trip through Mexico to L.A. on a mission to find a family heirloom. Esteva is the author of several books of poetry and has taught with the East Bay Institute for Urban Arts, Digital Underground Story Telling, June Jordan's Poetry for the People, and Writers' Corps. She has toured across North America with her poetry several times.
Punk writer/drummer Michelle Cruz Gonzales is the author of The Spitboy Rule: Tales of a Xicana in a Female Punk Band (www.PMPress.org), described as “…a compelling and insightful journey into the world of 90s punk….” She is featured in the 2017 documentary, Turn it Around: Story of East Bay Punk. Gonzales is also an English professor.
Maw Shein Win is a Burmese American poet and the poet laureate of El Cerrito. Her newest work is Score and Bone (www.nomadicpress.org), described as “a visceral cinematic landscape.” Manic D Press will release Win’s Invisible Gifts in April 2018. Her poetry has appeared in Cimarron Review, Fanzine, and The Fabulist, among other journals.
