Social Justice: Progress or Regress in America?

In connection with Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066: The Tag project this special Talking Art panel, Social Justice: Progress or Regress in America?, will promote conversation surrounding the Japanese-American internment during WWII, racial profiling, social justice and how we can keep the dialogue moving forward. Join us for a reception at the ICA amongst the exhibition before we move down the street to the San Jose Stage where the panel discussion will take place.

Panelists:

Zoe Lofgren, is the U.S. Representative from California’s 19th Congressional District; she has served in Congress since 1995. Active on numerous fronts, she is a strong advocate of immigration reform.

Luis Valdez is the founder of El Teatro Campesino and a pioneer of the Chicano Movement. Regarded as the father of Chicano theater, Valdez was awarded the National Medal of the Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts. He is the author of the plays "Zoot Suit" and "I Don't Need No Stinking Badges". Valdez's most recent play, "Valley of the Heart", probes injustice against Japanese Americans, viewed through Chicano eyes. The plot draws on his own childhood experiences in what he calls a "memory play": A Mexican American sharecropper family takes over a ranch whose Japanese American owners are interned in 1942, just as Valdez's parents took over a Japanese grower's farm when he was 2 years old. The play ran for four weeks at Teatro Campesino in San Juan Batista to sold-out audiences that came from as far as away as Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Maha Elgenaidi is the founder and first president and CEO of the Islamic Network Group, a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides education about Muslims and their faith. She is the recipient of the "Civil Rights Leadership Award" from the California Association of Human Relations Organizations.

Jeff Rosen is the Santa Clara County District Attorney. His commitment to law and public safety were forged in the struggles and triumphs of his family. Every member of his father’s family was interned in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. After the war, his father’s family spent five years in refugee camps before immigrating to the United States and settling in California. Rosen is graduate of UCLA and the UC Berkeley School of Law.

Moderator:

Larry Stone is the Santa Clara County Assessor since 1994. An ardent champion of the arts, he was a co-founder of Arts Council Silicon Valley and was instrumental in establishing the Transient Occupancy Tax as a source of funding for the arts in San Jose. He has served on the boards of numerous arts organizations and was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts Council of Silicon Valley in 2010. Currently, he serves on the San Jose Jazz Advisory Board and is a member of the 1stACT Arts Investment Catalyst Team.
