Hang Art is pleased to announce Smothered, an Abigail McCallum solo presentation featuring all new oil paintings.
Drawn to flowers past their prime, McCallum views this point of death as the moment of intrigue and opportunity for transformation from what is not traditionally considered beautiful and is usually discarded.
By rearranging and creating new compositions from dried and shriveled floral bits and pieces, McCallum is able to present a re-birthing through her heavy layering of oil paint, literally smothering the canvas with the medium. Finding beauty in rebirth draws a powerful connection to how she has dealt with the tragedies of losing a loved one, and ultimately how the human experience can be completely overwhelming.
As a subtle tribute to a friend who passed this year, Smothered is in memory of his influence on McCallum’s painting and in life.
