Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present 'Sketches In Wood' by Sebastian Parker. Sebastian Parker is a furniture designer, woodworker, artist, and jazz musician based in San Francisco. As a professional woodworker he is constantly interacting with wood of diverse forms and textures. This exposure has given him endless fodder for new ideas, playful by-products or “off-cutsâ€, happy accidents, and new techniques for manipulating wood. One such technique that Parker has embraced is steam bending, wherein he soaks wood in water for several days, subjects it to hot steam, and is then bends it into elastic and dynamic curves that stand in contrast to the rectilinear world of furniture fabrication. 'Sketches In Wood' showcases the culmination of several years of exploration with this wood bending technique. These sculptures find a natural dialogue with elements in the wild, and they incorporate found objects. Play and improvisation are central to Parker’s process, as are the unique set of limitations posed by the language of steam bending. Join us on Friday, March 31st from 6-8pm for the opening reception of this exhibition of new work. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.
For the past ten years Sebastian has been creating wood sculpture and custom designed furniture at his studio in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. His formal training began at SF City College, studying with Oliver Quezada in the ceramic sculpture department. He later moved to New York to take classes at the School of Visual Arts where he turned to metal working, apprenticing with sculptors Joel Perlman and John Clement. Living abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Parker met and briefly studied with sculptor Jorge Gamarra and had his first introduction to wood sculpture. Upon returning to San Francisco in 2008, Parker turned to woodworking full time, and upon landing an apprenticeship with master craftsmen Michael Bock in Marin County he began to design and build furniture. Sebastian has since been working in tandem as a sculptor and furniture maker, always in the medium of wood, an inexhaustible source of inspiration.
