In Sisters Not Twins, a collection of memory pairings by Melissa Joseph, she combines photographs from her childhood with a variety of found and handmade objects. The images, printed on Indian silks, become abstracted through folds inspired by traditional saree draping techniques. The viewer is denied access to the full image, imitating our inability to fully access our own memories and forcing us, instead, to reconstruct them with pieces of stories we have been told or have repeated to ourselves over time. Joseph pairs these folded images with objects, some of which she has held on to for years and others which she discovered during her residency at The Growlery. When constructing each piece, she intentionally considers formal relationships but also hopes that the psychological relationships between the paired artifacts evoke personal memories in the viewers as well.
