“Memories are motionless, and the more securely they are fixed in space,
the sounder they are.”
The Poetics of Space, Gaston Bachelard

All That Lingers is a series of photographs and texts that explore the interplay between memory and place. The way perception of our environment shifts when tied to a meaningful experience and the memory of that experience forever lingers in a space. For this project Sirin Bahar Demirel asks contributors to share with her a piece of personal, important news that they have received in their life. She then visits the space where the participant received the news. Devoid of human presence and captured with certain physical and emotional distance, these places are presented as if they have a life of their own, hidden from the eye.

These photos of every day spaces have a poetic material stand in between real and fictional, not only because of the relational nature of space but because they have been mediated by memory and re-interpreted by the photographer. Image and text compliment one another, and together they serve to a greater narrative. All That Lingers reflects on how we navigate life carrying memories, how these memories can be engraved in even the most mundane places, and this peculiar power these places have on us.

About the Artist

personal. Recent festivals and group exhibitions that she participated in include Arts Electronica Festival, Austria; Transmediale Arts&Digital Culture Festival, Berlin; Kassel Documentary Video and Film Festival. She was the artist-in- residence at Digital Artist Residency (2016) with a one-month web-based photo project. She currently lives and works in Florida, USA.
