Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present Sinking (also Rising) by Abigail McNamara. Regarding her new body of work, Abigail writes:
“I’ve been swaying in the waters of a slow sinking, a stuck feeling, watching tides rise and land sink beneath us. I immersed the pages in water in an effort to drown them, and then the paintings made themselves. In watching these waters change, I’ve come to realize that this cycle, too, necessitates rising. Rising up, distilling, and refining what is really there – bringing me ever closer to the essence, the root, the true.
What does the state of the natural world reveal about human values, behaviors, and systems? How does nature reflect our own behaviors back at us and what do we have to learn from gazing at this reflection?”
To explore concepts of societal value, dominion narratives, and the unrelenting loom of a changing climate, she uses her hands to manipulate tangible and elemental materials. Abigail maintains a focus on working methods and materials that are situated within the realm of art and craft traditions; however, her approach is non-traditional, emphasizing discovery and invention over technical savvy. She creates palpable, intimate, and evocative forms whose ethereality and vulnerability counter the harsh and weighty queries she is investigating. Through this work, she seeks to expose truths about what it is to be a human, or an organism – as both an individual and as part of a collective. Join us on Friday, February 17th from 6-8pm for the opening reception of this exhibition of new work. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.
Abigail McNamara (b. Missoula, Montana) is a sculptor, drawer, and installation artist. Abigail received a B.A. in Studio Art from Lewis & Clark College (Portland, Oregon) in 2012. She recently received a Career Opportunity Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission for her exhibition at Duplex Collective. Abigail has been selected as an artist-in-residence by The Residency in the Garden, Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, and Grin City Collective.
