Single Mothers: The Canadian punks of Single Mothers like it loud. This is the type of music that you can listen to when you are pissed off and desperate but have somehow managed to still have some sense of humor left. Frontman Andrew Thompson doesn't sing, so much as yell/talk -- you can clearly make out his honest words despite the aggressive, punk attitude as he rants about living and dying in Ontario, girls at a party who like Arcade Fire and Elliott Smith, integrity, pretension, and guys like you and me. You can feel the frustration that Thompson must live with every day via his songwriting, which he uses as both a pulpit and a confessional. Single Mothers is not a typical indie-art band that Canada has been producing for the last few years, they are raw and to the point. More like a hardcore band of olden days, but with plenty of musical talent to keep things interesting by adding in some unexpected, easy to listen to musicality between crashing anger and punk ethos. The vocals and songwriting are the stars of the show, but the guitar and drums are perfect indie punk. Fans of early Hot Hot Heat, Husker Du, Hellacopters, or angry (is there any other kind) 80s hardcore will feel right at home with these Canadians. Live, Single Mothers are ferocious, energetic, and prone to causing a little circle pit. After a few minutes of Thompson's songs and the wild energy of the band, Single Mothers might be your favorite Canadian import.
