Classical guitarist Paul Galbraith (who is known for his unusual guitar technique of holding the guitar like a cello), performs a beautiful program featuring Schubert's "Arpeggione" sonata with cellist Antonio Meneses, formerly of the Beaux Arts Trio.
Internationally renowned as a brilliant innovator of the classical guitar, Paul Galbraith has been working since the 1980s towards expanding the technical limits of his instrument, besides augmenting the quantity and quality of its repertoire.
These efforts have already resulted in a series of critically acclaimed recordings of works by Bach, Haydn and Brahms, along with his own arrangements of folk tunes from various countries, all of which demonstrate the originality of his musical personality. By exchanging the traditional guitar for the eight-string Brahms Guitar, which he helped to develop, Galbraith found the ideal instrument with which to interpret the challenging Classical transcriptions from his highly personal repertoire.
Born in Recife, Brazil, in 1957 into a family of musicians, Antonio Meneses began his cello studies at the age of ten. At 16, he met the famous Italian cellist Antonio Janigro and was asked to join Janigro's classes in Dusseldorf and later in Stuttgart.
He won the first Prize at the 1977 ARD International Competition in Munich and was awarded First Prize and Gold Medal at the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
Appearing in the music capitals of Europe, the Americas and Asia, Antonio Meneses performs with most of the world's leading orchestras (in Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Vienna, Paris, Prague, Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Munich, New York, Philadelphia Washington D.C. or Tokyo.
In addition to his busy concert schedule, Antonio Meneses regularly gives masterclasses in Europe (Madrid-Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia), the Americas (Domaine Forget) and Japan (Tokyo University), as well as teaching at the Bern Conservatory since 2008.
