SF Girls Chorus presents "Surprising Freedoms: Music from Behind Convent Walls"

The Grammy Award-winning San Francisco Girls Chorus will be joined by acclaimed guest early music ensemble TENET from New York for its 2015-2016 season opening concert featuring rarely performed music written by and for women in 17th Italian convents. Performances will be given Friday, October 30, at 8 pm at Mission Dolores in San Francisco and Sunday, November 1, at 4 pm at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. Girls Chorus Artistic Director Lisa Bielawa and TENET Artistic Director and soprano Jolle Greenfield have the program, entitled Surprising Freedoms: Music from Behind Convent Walls, which will feature music by Vittoria Aleotti (c.1575-after 1620), Francesca Caccini (1587-1641), Caterina Assandra (c.1590-after 1618), Lucrezia Orsina Vizzana (1590-1662), Giovanni Felice Sances (c.1600-1679), Chiara Margarita Cozzolani (1602-c.1676), Luigi Rossi (c.1597-1653) and Maria Francesca Nascimbeni (c.1640-1680). The program will also include music by Hildegard von Bingen and works by anonymous composers and will be conducted by San Francisco Girls Chorus Music Director Valérie Sainte-Agathe.
