SF City Chorus & the Calvary Presbyterian Chancel Choir Present Mendelssohn's 'Elijah'

SEE EVENT DETAILS
San Francisco City Chorus and the Calvary Presbyterian Chancel Choir (nearly 100 voices in total) together with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra will join forces to present Mendelssohn's epic oratorio, Elijah!
This magnificent piece, one of the great masterworks of the choral and orchestral repertoire, tells the story of the prophet Elijah, from his cinematic showdown with the priests of Baal, to the miraculous bringing of rain to drought-stricken Israel, and his final ascension to heaven in a fiery whirlwind on a fiery chariot.
Full of dramatic and heart-breakingly beautiful music, Elijah is one of the pinnacles of western music, and the crowning achievement of Mendelssohn's career. Calvary is excited to present this glorious piece for the very first time.
And please join us also Monday, November 13 at 7 pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church, for a pre-concert lecture entitled "Becoming Elijah: From the Hebrew bible to Mendelssohn's oratorio" led by Dr. Daniel Matt, a prominent scholar of Jewish mysticism who taught for many years at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Daniel's biography of Elijah the Prophet was published in Yale's series Jewish Lives: Becoming Elijah, Prophet of Transformation, awarded the inaugural Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Book Prize. This is a free event, co-sponsored by Congregation Emanu-El.
