Screening of Linda and the Mockingbirds

SEE EVENT DETAILS
'Linda and the Mockingbirds' is a song-soaked, foot-stomping trip straight to the heart of what it means to be Mexican-and American-and the complex joy of being both at the same time. Enjoy a screening of the 2020 documentary at San Francisco's Roxie Theater on Sunday July 18 from 2-4pm, co-produced by Los Cenzontles Cultural Arts Academy and McEvoy Foundation for the Arts in conjunction with the exhibition 'Next to You' at McEvoy Arts. Tickets, on sale now, range from free to $10.

'Linda and The Mockingbirds' pairs acclaimed musician Linda Ronstadt with Los Cenzontles ("mockingbirds" in the Nahuatl language). Follow Ronstadt, musician Jackson Browne, and a busload of Cenzontles as they journey to the little town of Banamichi in Sonora, Mexico, where Ronstadt's grandfather was born. Preceding the film is 'Good Morning Aztlan,' a music video by Les Blank and Maureen Gosling for Los Lobos' 2002 song, featuring Los Cenzontles.

Based in San Pablo, CA since 1994, Los Cenzontles is a grassroots artist-driven organization committed to amplifying the roots of Mexican culture through classes, events, media, and performances. The Roxie Theater, a San Francisco Mission District landmark since 1912, serves as a forum for the independent film community and reflects the spirit of the diverse Bay Area population.

This film screening is one of several live events organized by McEvoy Arts that amplify the themes of its exhibition 'Next to You.' Comprised of artworks from the McEvoy Family Collection, 'Next to You' celebrates the joy, vitality, and healing power of the performing arts, singing a farewell ballad to a strange and challenging time while looking forward to a reunited future. Accompanying 'Next to You' is a daily screening program of short films, 'Hearing Aids,' guest curated by visual artist and filmmaker Alison O'Daniel, that consider a new sensory sensitivity to a world emerging from the pandemic. Admission to McEvoy Arts is free.

Free-$10.
