SASHA BERLINER & MATT WONG

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Our third night of vibraphone and piano duos is a true homecoming of world-class artists whose careers have roots in SFJAZZ's Education programs.

Two exceptional young musicians who embody the best of the Bay Area jazz scene, vibraphonist Sasha Berliner and pianist Matt Wong are San Francisco-reared players who've spent the past five years or so making waves in New York City.

Standout talents since their mid-teens, they first played together in the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars. Numerous awards, commissions, and honors followed, and in the process of forging distinctive musical identities they've earned widespread esteem as bicoastal improvisers, composers, and bandleaders. Berliner has also stepped forward as an important voice among women musicians fighting for equal access and respect. Her music makes its own case for due attention, as evidenced by her gorgeous album of original compositions Azalea, which is built around a brilliant young electro-acoustic quintet with Morgan Guerin on EWI, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, pianist/keyboardist Chris McCarthy, drummer Jongkuk Kim, and Berliner on vibes, Hammond B-3, percussion and sampling. Wong has performed internationally with his trio, while also composing for large ensembles such as the Jazz Mafia's Realistic Orchestra and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
