On March 25, 2018 San Jose Symphonic Choir will present J. S. Bach’s extraordinary Mass in B Minor, a work widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements of classical music. Written at a time when musical composition was beginning to move away from the Baroque style, it is comprised of an astonishing range of material, ideas, and information, from the use of ancient Gregorian chant to precursors of modern classicism. The four sections of the work represent a complete setting of the Latin Ordinary mass. Scholars continue to debate about what prompted this creative effort. Many believe Bach compiled the Mass as a summation of his life’s work; it was one of his last compositions, not completed until 1749, the year before his death, and never performed in its entirety during his lifetime.
The Choir sings under the baton of Music Director Leroy Kromm, and will be accompanied by the San Jose Baroque Orchestra.
