Music has always been a companion to human movement -- whether traveling across oceans, migrating toward opportunity, or journeying inward in search of identity and hope. Join the San Francisco Pride Band on Sunday, March 22 for The Universal Language, a winter community concert at the historic Herbst Theatre, located a short walk from the Civic Center BART/Muni station.
The "Official Band of San Francisco" is proud to welcome Matthew Fell, the newly appointed Artistic Director of Concert Band. When conceiving the program, Fell chose music and composers that tell stories of where we come from, what we endure, and how we move through the world.
Composer Michele Fernández' "Of Endless Miles and Empty Rafts" was inspired by stories about the perilous journeys many immigrant families undertake -- including ones by sea -- in search of safety. Valerie Coleman's "Roma" is a fusion of musical styles and traditions celebrating the Romani people -- a culturally rich yet historically marginalized community. The piece is organized into five themes that evoke different aspects of life and identity of Romani women.
Come enjoy a musical journey that is both physical and spiritual, tracing paths through sky and river, across cultural traditions, and into celebrations of resilience and community.
