Come celebrate summer with the San Francisco City Chorus presentation of Henry Purcell’s delightful early opera, Dido and Æneas. This romance of a tragic queen and her faithless hero, united by love and undone by sorcery, is both tender and comic, appealing to audiences of all ages.
In his day, the late 17th century, Purcell was noted as ‘the’ composer for all occasions, including all manner of royal festivities. Many music historians and music lovers regard Purcell as England’s greatest music genius, unequaled until Elgar, Vaughan Williams, and Britten in the 20th century.
Directed by Larry Marietta with Twila Ehmcke, mezzo-soprano, Marta Johansen, soprano, Michael Desnoyers, tenor, John Walko, organ, and strings from the SF Academy Orchestra.
Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and college students, and free for children.
