Flag Day began in American Samoa as a means to commemorate the raising of the United States flay on the island of Tutuila on April 17, 1900. However, it quickly developed into an important cultural event, an event dominated by patriotism and pride. This event has provided a unique opportunity for members of San Francisco Samoan community to meet and support its local programs. Its objectives include fostering the Samoan cultural heritage and promoting its national unity and self-esteem in order for Samoan Americans to become more effective and productive members of the greater American society. This is the opportunity to become acquainted, to know each other and share in values that enhance human relationships. The Flag Day gatherings, particularly under competitive circumstances is one of the most effective means for strengthening both character and individualism.
A typical Samoan community in the United States consists of Samoans from American Samoa and the Independent state of Samoa (presently called Samoa). We proudly celebrate the Samoan Flag Day in honor of two epochal events in the Samoan history, the Independence of Western Samoa and the recognition of the raising of the United States flag over American Samoa. Unlike in the Samoa territories, where each region has its own geopolitical and economic systems, Samoans throughout the United States are unified by common economic and government systems.
