GRADUATE LECTURE SERIESRudy Lemcke : The New World: Of Video Games and Museums
This talk focuses on Rudy Lemcke’s recent immersive installation and video game The New World (2017), created for the de Young Museum’s artist-in-residence program. It charts a path from conceptual art and Fluxus, to experimental video, net art and game development. The talk interrogates ideas of temporal and spatial shifts brought about by new forms of artistic representation, production and distribution, and opens a conversation about rethinking the place of “the museum” in contemporary culture.
Rudy Lemcke is a Bay Area new media artist, curator and cultural activist. His artwork has been exhibited at the San Francisco Art Institute; Modernism Inc.; UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; Whitney Museum of American Art; Stony Brook University, Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, and Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal. His curatorial projects include a trilogy of interlocking exhibitions: From Self to #Selfie (2017), A History of Violence (2018), and Precarious Lives (2019).
