Describing Roger Glenn as a multi-instrumentalist is wholly inadequate. Known among his peers as a supremely talented improviser, he played flute with vibraphonist Cal Tjader and vibes with flautist Herbie Mann. Glenn made an auspicious recording debut with legendary pianist/composer Mary Lou Williams and went on to contribute to classic albums by Cuban percussion maestro Mongo Santamaria (Mongo´70), pioneering funk/jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd (Black Byrd), and Latin jazz star Cal Tjader (the GRAMMY Award-winning La Onda Va Bien).
For this concert he's sticking to vibes in a potent pan-American duo with the great Brazilian pianist Marcos Silva, who spent more than a decade as music director for Flora Purim and Airto. A gifted composer whose music has been recorded by jazz giants such as Herbie Mann, Toninho Horta, and Romero Lubambo, he's been at the center of the Bay Area Brazilian jazz scene for more than three decades as an educator. Playing tunes from the U.S., Cuba, and Brazil, he and Glenn have designed a program that exemplifies the different ways that African and European cultures converged.
