Rodrigo y Gabriela
Do you want flamenco with your heavy metal? Acid rock with your classical guitars? If so, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at your service. Known for a double-guitar attack that translates heavy-metal power to nylon-stringed classical guitars played with flamenco fury, Rodrigo y Gabriela are openhearted entertainers whose musical passion bridges classical and contemporary styles to create a world of its own. Alone on stage, they evoke the passion and precision of heavy metal -- such as Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica -- and, more recently, the expansive meditations of vintage Pink Floyd. The Mexico City-based guitar duo toured the United States and Europe in 2019 to support their eighth album, Mettavolution.
~~~~~~~~
Part of the surprise success of instrumental Mexican acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela can be attributed to just how simply and directly they execute complex elements. They fuse frantic flamenco guitar work with jazz, rock, folk, and some incredible percussive techniques (And an energy influenced by their heavy metal roots). It was a bit much for their hometown of Mexico City, but they got discovered after relocating to Ireland, of all places. Their self-titled LP charted in Ireland, shortly followed by the rest of the world. The US particularly embraced them after several late night show appearances, an MTV push and their significant contribution to the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film soundtrack.
