Since its closing in 2002, the Cactus Club has become a sort of legend to local musicians, a place where live music once thrived in San Jose unlike any time before it or after. Fittingly, the Back Bar SoFA, which occupies the back side of the old Cactus Club building, is making their upcoming five-week battle of the bands a tribute to the Cactus Club. Four bands will go head to head each week, with the winner taking home a prize of $500. The final night will relocate next door to the Miami Beach Club, the same spot where the Cactus Club once stood, and the winners will duke it out for a $2,000 cash prize. This Thursday Pounders, Redshift, X-Rated Funk Squad and others yet to be announced compete for that first win. (Amulya Datla)
