California Utopias: Shifting Perspectives at the Edge of the West

Robert Minervini is an artist working in painting, drawing, printmaking, murals, and site-specific public art. His work examines spatial environments and notions of utopia in large-scale cityscapes, landscapes, and floral still-life arrangements, which addresses the ecological impact of humanity.
He received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and his BFA from Tyler School of Art. He has an extensive exhibition history and has participated in artist in residence programs at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the Headlands Center of the Arts. His work has been reviewed and published in the LA Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, Art Ltd. Magazine, Beautiful Decay Magazine, and New American Paintings. He has completed multiple public art works through the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the San Francisco Arts Commission. He currently lives and works in San Francisco, and Oakland, California.
Jamie Vasta is an Oakland-based artist who uses glitter and glue on wooden panels to create evocative paintings that explore dynamics of beauty and power and riff on the history of painting. She received her BFA in 2003 from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and her MFA in 2006 from the California College of the Arts. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Crocker Museum in Sacramento and the Berkeley Art Museum. Vasta’s work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America, Art ltd., Artweek, the SF Bay Guardian, and the New York Times. She is represented by the Patricia Sweetow Gallery in Oakland.
Vasta’s work uses the hefty weight of the painting canon to counter the camp tendencies of her medium. In these pieces, Vasta takes on the 19th century Luminist painters, bringing their use of romantic color and clarity of light down to the more intimate scale of the SF Bay Area’s regional parks. Where the 19th century painters of the Western landscape found the sublime in broad vistas, we must today find our wonder in the smaller scale of the local landscape- a single oak tree, a pond that exists only for the rainiest month of the year, a dense fog that briefly blocks our view of the city.
