$20 at the door
Join Mbira Player/composer Robert Heirendt for a special album release concert! Robert's new album Name & Form brings together the diverse influences of traditional Zimbabwean trance music with modern improvisational jazz. The evening will feature Robert Heirendt on mbira (Zimbabwean kalimba), Randy McKean on alto sax, and East Bay reeds player Dan Plonsey on alto sax.
From Robert: "Back in late 2018, while reading Eknath Easwaran's translation of the Chandogya Upanishad (an ancient Hindu scripture), I started to feel inspired by this idea - looking deeply into one thing, we can gain knowledge and insight into so many other similar things. This concept got me thinking about going deeply into one direction as a composer and using like elements throughout a series of pieces. In this case, I somehow settled on two mbiras and two alto saxes - the like components of two mbiras bouncing off of each other and two alto saxes in dialogue with each other. My daughter Mei Lin Heirendt added pizzicato violin parts to all three of the primary compositions, adding so much to richness of the overall "musical stew" I was going for!I'm really happy with how it all turned out and so excited to be sharing this project at Bird & Beckett as this project has strong literary tie ins."
