Robert Greenfield / BEAR: The Life and Times of Augustus Owsley Stanley III

SEE EVENT DETAILS
In BEAR: The Life and Times of Augustus Owsley Stanley III, award winning author and biographer Robert Greenfield brings readers the definitive biography of a Grateful Dead legend—Augustus Owsley Stanley III, better known by his nickname, Bear. Drawing on extensive interviews with his notoriously reclusive subject as well as his friends and contemporaries, Greenfield provides us with unparalleled access to one of the most important forces in the rise of the sixties counterculture.

Owsley Stanley provided the LSD that enabled Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters to put on their Acid Tests. At Monterey Pop, Owsley turned on Pete Townshend of The Who and sent John Lennon the shipment of LSD that resulted in The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour album. Convinced of The Grateful Dead’s enormous potential, Owsley became the band’s first financial backer. By keeping them going in their early days, he made it possible for the Dead to reach their current level of worldwide fame. He also faithfully recorded many of their greatest live performances and designed their famous Wall of Sound.

BEAR masterfully takes readers through Owsley's long and eventful journey from a life of wealth and privilege to serving a long stint in federal prison. Filled with amazing stories and surprising biographical information as well as first-hand reflections by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Jerry Garcia, BEAR is a perfect addition to any Grateful Dead fan and sixties enthusiast’s collection.
