Reception: Saturday 28 January, 4 - 6pm, Exhibition January 28 - March 4, 2017, Tu, W, F, Sa 10am-5:30pm, Th 11am-7pm
Kolkata-born & New York-based, Rina Banerjee fills the gallery with her fantastical sculptures & delicately swirling paintings in an exhibition that seeks to describe the human experience in an era of unprecedented migration & interconnectedness. Banerjee's sculptures are shamanistic assemblages of textiles, feathers, sparkling glass & tinkling bells. Beaded, embroidered & sensuously monstrous, they wantonly conjoin the exotic & rare with the cheap & mass-produced-rejecting conventional hierarchies of material & culture. Banerjee offers the optimistic possibility of a world freed from the constraints of conventional standards of beauty, worth, social pecking order & what is "proper."
