This new body of work is a synthesis of recent collage work and my earlier watercolors. Music, and especially rhythm, are expressed in color and form. Certain obsessions and underlying themes crystallized into symbols and shapes, and the central place I had reserved for representation dissolved....This is my truth. Life IS mysterious, it is full of riddles, and sometimes it is illuminated by visions. In these paintings I offer not the clarity of answers, but mysterious adventures on the stormy seas of the unknown and unknowable. Richard Bolingbroke
Richard Bolingbroke is a watercolor artist of unusual skill; his compositions with their exact placements of textiles and flowers, reveal an artist with a sure sense of formal structure, as well as an exquisite hand. His highly competent use of the watercolor medium, often on a large scale, is based on a brilliance of color and a transparent surface; his powerful paintings move past decoration to embrace the sensuality of color and form. Jonathan Goodman
Whatever one hopes for in conventional still life, the artist’s early depictions of floral arrangements move the genre beyond the expected into realms of other possibility. Philosophically, they ask us to consider the relationship between the physical world as we know it and the invisible forces guiding what we perceive. Certainly they contain the nucleus for meditative exploration; the mind is cleared and the spirit activated entering into one of these compositions. Bolingbroke transforms the ordinary into magical engagements of the extraordinary. David Duckworth
Richard Bolingbroke, born in Southsea England, is an award winning watercolorist, widely exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States with numerous works in private and corporate collections.
