RetroBlakesberg: The Music Never Stopped is a solo exhibition by Bay Area-based photographer Jay Blakesberg that travels through some of the most explosive moments in music history, with a particular lens on iconic moments of Bay Area music history. On view August 31, 2023-January 28, 2024, the exhibition brings together more than 200 photographs and related ephemera from the years 1978-2008 that feature images of the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Neil Young, Soundgarden, and Carlos Santana, among many others. Through a series of photographs shot exclusively on film, the exhibition explores the musicians that changed American music, the fans that experienced it, and the storied career of Jay Blakesberg.
The exhibition follows Blakesberg's career, from his early years as a teenager in New Jersey photographing bands, his work documenting live performances, his move out west, and eventually his shift to a focus on portraiture. Through the works on view visitors will encounter iconic images of some of the most well-known musicians from the past several decades, presented alongside narrations by Blakesberg detailing behind-the-scenes moments from throughout his work. The show promises to be a lot of fun for visitors, and we'd love to invite you in early if you have time!
