‘Remembering 1619’ Artistic Presentation: EJS's 19th Anniversary Event

The Equal Justice Society’s year-long Remembering 1619 observance marks the 400th anniversary of the advent of slavery in the United States.
One of the highlights of our observance will be an unforgettable artistic presentation featuring musicians, actors and dancers from the acclaimed Marcus Shelby Orchestra; Zaccho Dance Theatre; actor, Steven Anthony Jones; filmmaker Cheo Tyehimba Taylor; and vocalist Faye Carol.

The talented and brilliant artists are creating an artistic presentation incorporating the pain and triumph of Africans in the United States.
The performance will cover the 400 years in four acts:
Act I: Arrival – On August 19 or 20, 1619, twenty Africans who were captured by the Spanish arrived in Jamestown Virginia. We will also illustrate the splendor and glory of the African continent.
Act II: Chattel Slavery – The artists will explore the realities of enslavement along with sharing stories of resistance.
Act III: Reconstruction and Jim Crow – The years after emancipation were filled with soaring highs as well as the painful reality of deception and retrenchment.
Act IV: The Modern Age - The artists will explore contemporary manifestations of the legacy of enslavement, resistance, triumph, and excellence.
