Upstart Modern presents a solo exhibition of paintings
by Laura Roebuck November 17th, 2022 thru January 17th, 2023
Sausalito, CA, November 17th, 2022, Upstart Modern presents "Reclaiming Pink", a solo exhibition of paintings by Laura Roebuck. This exhibition will feature paintings developed over the past two years. The opening reception is Tuesday, December 13th from 6-7:30pm.
Exhibition Statement
In a world where we continually redefine ourselves through the changing lenses of gender and politics, Laura Roebuck's solo exhibition, "Reclaiming Pink" is the result of her efforts to reclaim the color pink from its long association with stereotypical femininity and intense commercial marketing. Growing up in the 1950/60s, Roebuck witnessed the co-opting of pink and its subsequent negative cultural effects and rejected the color. In her early paintings, there is a clear absence of pink. However, as she has moved through her practice, she realized that the exclusion of pink had become its own limitation. "The Pink Series" is the bold integration of pink into Roebuck's abstract expressionist paintings. In her newest work, the artist uses the language of spontaneity, improvisation, and movement to negotiate the color pink, its history and its continued contemporary relevance. Roebuck has focused on its conceptual role in her paintings and works on paper. This is an exhibition about choice and growth. Roebuck's work offers opportunities to consider renewal and reinvention.
