Trumpeter Randy Brecker, saxophonist Tod Dickow, and the Bay Area-based ensemble honor the work of the late saxophonist Michael Brecker in an acoustic setting.
A blast from the 1970s heyday of fusion, Live at the Baked Potato! Charged Particles with Tod Dickow Play the Music of Michael Brecker fully earned its exclamation point, catapulting the Bay Area band onto international stages. Built on the power trio led by drummer Jon Krosnick, a professor at Stanford and the director of the university's Political Psychology Research Group, Charged Particles is equally formidable playing acoustic or electric, with veteran pianist/keyboardist Murray Low and supremely versatile bassist Aaron Germain.
Coincidentally released around the same time as Bill Milkowski's 2021 biography Ode to a Tenor Titan: The Life and Times and Music of Michael Brecker, Charged Particles' third album helped focus attention on the brilliant but neglected book of tunes by Brecker (1949-2007), while introducing journeyman tenor saxophonist Tod Dickow as an overlooked master. The album also caught the ear of trumpet great Randy Brecker, Michael's older sibling and partner in outrageous jazz funk as a co-leader of the Brecker Brothers.
Duly impressed by Charged Particles and its mastery of Michael's music, Randy relished the opportunity to delve into his music, joining the group for several performances. One of jazz's most widely admired trumpeters, Brecker makes his first Bay Area appearance with Charged Particles at this concert.
