RAIN & SHINE :: Rebecca Johnson & Gerry Tsutakawa Sculptures

SEE EVENT DETAILS
We are delighted to present an exclusive online exhibition of sculptures in bronze and stone by two celebrated artists from the Pacific Coast.

For Rebecca Johnson, whose studio is in Philo, Northern California and Gerry Tsutakawa, based in Seattle, the unusual weather patterns that have been sweeping the West Coast, and many other regions, become thoughtful inspiration for sculpture.

Johnson takes us along on her celebration of rain in parched Northern California, and Tsutakawa, long a student of the abstract patterns found in nature, especially in the ocean and the sky, expresses the absolute certainty of the sun rays and the ocean waves -at a time when certainty in meteorology is sorely lacking.

In Rebecca Johnson's recent sculptures juxtaposing stone and bronze, oversized raindrops in cast bronze are finished with exquisite patinas ranging from blue, turquoise and green to browns, accentuated by the gold sheen of polished bronze. The contrasting basalt is gently carved, polished or left raw. In "Water Table", a single raindrop provides the balance that supports the entire sculpture, much as rain underpins all life in our fragile ecosystems. "Rain Forest" (two versions) develops the idea of rain as life-giving, with its raindrop sprouting a fern leaf high above what appears to be a stream descending the vertical stone.

Gerry Tsutakawa is best known for his numerous monumental corporate and public commissions throughout the Northwest and Japan. One of his iconic forms of late is found in his SeaWave series and here we have made available a rare cast bronze edition of the maquette of the already acclaimed public art sculpture at the Seattle Center. The full-scale sculpture of SeaWave was installed at Climate Pledge Arena in 2021; the cast version in an edition of 20, each patinaed with the signature Tsutakawa dark blue patina, is much easier to own and place at its scale of 7" by 9"!
