Berkeley's up and coming progressive rock band Raiju catch that perfect balance among melodic pop songwriting, thrashing guitars and technical wizardry, sort of like a cross between Mastodon and Dream Theater. They are still young, having just formed in March. But hey, metal is a young man's sport, though they have the chops of musicians 10 years their senior. What's most impressive is their ability to go heavy then bring it down to gentle sweeping ballads--sometimes within the same song. (Amulya Datla)
