Quinteto Latino

Diane Grubbe, flute; Kyle Bruckmann, oboe; Leslie Tagorda, clarinet; Shawn Jones, bassoon; Armando Castellano, French horn

Carlos Chavez Soli No. 2
Liduino Pitombeira Suite Hermética
Júlio Medaglia Belle Epoque en Sud-America

Founded in 2004, Quinteto Latino aims to expand the boundaries of classical music by performing works composed by Latino composers exclusively. Through innovative work in venues both traditional and nontraditional, the quintet makes this music accessible, relevant and inspiring to audiences across cultural, class and ethnic lines. Quinteto Latino is excited to bring their 2017–2018 concert program, featuring works from Mexico and Brazil, to Old First Concerts. It includes Mexico’s renowned Carlos Chavez and his masterful Soli No. 2, a five-movement work which highlights a different instrument in each movement. The program also contrasts two very different works by Brazilian composers Liduino Pitombeira and Júlio Medaglia. Suite Hermética, by Pitombeira, is an homage to the Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and composer Hermeto Pascoal and is full of complex rhythms and references to song and dance forms of Hermeto’s home. Medaglia’s Belle Epoque en Sud-America is a lively piece, artfully sampling a tango, waltz and Brazilian chorinho. We hope you can join us for this exciting and informative evening of Latino music, composers and culture. For more information please visit quintetolatino.org
