Queens of Boogie Woogie

SEE EVENT DETAILS
14th Annual Queens of Boogie Woogie at Yoshi’s Oakland
The legendary Queens of Boogie Woogie are back for a 14th year of unpredictable and soulful piano fun. This year’s line up of great American piano stylists includes Deanna Bogart, Doña Oxford, Sue Palmer, and Wendy DeWitt. Yoshis Oakland welcomes the Queens on Monday, April 2nd at 8:00pm.
Pianist, saxophonist, vocalist and songwriter Deanna Bogart is best known as an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and multifaceted musician whose fans value the eclectic diversity of her genre defying sensibilities and talents. For her latest Blind Pig release, Deanna has produced a beautifully intimate effort entitled Pianoland that spotlights her considerable skills as a solo performer. Deanna combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country and jazz into a blend she calls "blusion." This fusion has, among other honors, garnered her three consecutive Blues Music Awards (2008, 2009 and 2010) and an endorsement contract with Rico Reeds. She has won, at last count, more than 20 Wammies, the music awards for the hotly contested Washington, D.C. region.
Doña Oxford is an extraordinary, soulful and passionate singer, songwriter and keyboardist who’s Old School Soul vocals and her love of early rock and roll piano fuses to create a unique sound described as “Gladys Knight meets the Rolling Stones”. Known for her extraordinary boogie woogie style piano playing, many refer to Doña as the ‘Queen of Boogie Woogie’. Doña has played with many legends including Keith Richards, Bob Weir, Albert Lee, Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland and her idol, former Chuck Berry sideman and Father of Rock & Roll piano, Johnnie Johnson. In addition to recording 4 albums of her own, she also finds time to play on numerous Grammy and Handy winning albums, and movie scores including the Eddie Murphy box office hit Norbit.
Notorious for her beehive-wearing stint with blues diva Candye Kane in the '90's, Sue Palmer has been making her mark in the last decade with her band, the Motel Swing Orchestra. She has performed with Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton, Kim Wilson, Hadda Brooks and Sonny Leyland. San Diego's Queen of Boogie Woogie has been honored by having a day named after her, won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis for Best Self Produced CD and Best Blues Album and in December 2010, won the "Jim Croce Award for Excellence and Dedication to Music. Catch Sue at Boogie Woogie festivals world wide, and on the road with Candye Kane.
Wendy DeWitt plays boogie woogie and blues piano at a high energy pitch. Intense, personal and delivered with a contagious smile, her work is inspired by Otis Spann and seasoned by international touring, work with Delmark recording artist Steve Freund and R&B legend Hank Ballard. Currently writing her 9th album Wendy also organizes the 14th Annual Queens of Boogie Woogie, the SRO International Boogie Woogie Festival at SFJAZZ and the Blues Piano Orgy Series at Rancho Nicasio and Piedmont Piano. To insure that more people enjoy the thrill of boogie woogie and blues piano Wendy also teaches workshops at Berkeley's JazzSchool and Centrum - Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Workshop. Wendy is a 2014 International Blues Challenge finalist.

The Queens of Boogie Woogie series was started to accomplish several goals: friendship, assistance, inspiration and outreach. Wendy DeWitt initiated the first concert and since then shows have spread to Arizona and Washington and down the coast as far as San Diego, bringing together a vibrant group of women committed to continuing the tradition of high energy piano started by Hadda Brooks and her contemporaries.

With new songs and improvisations, this Yoshi’s concert will give jazz, boogie woogie, and blues piano fans a night of romping soul satisfaction in California’s premier jazz club -a venue fitting The Queens.
