Her artwork may be made of toys, but it is definitely not just for children. San Francisco-based artist bernadette (Bernadette Bohan), dubbed "Queen of the Underworld" by Left Magazine, and the force behind the art collective Box Factory, will soon exhibit large-scale pop art at Paxton Gate's Curiosities for Kids (766 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA) from January 5th, 2018 until early February in a show entitled All That Glitters Is Gold.
To create her sculptural pieces, bernadette has amassed a huge collection of bright, plastic toys- hundreds of them- to create fun artwork with serious presence from her creative castle, the Box Factory. In All That Glitters Is Gold, this new series of recycled plastic toys gives these discards a new life – reinvigorated and luxuriated with gold paint! Toys act as symbols of early consumerist culture, markers of gender, and landfill fodder. As an artist from the most expensive city in the United States, bernadette is asking questions about the perception of gold, ( Trump’s favorite color), what creates value, and what we're teaching our children.
Bernadette’s work has recently appeared at DaDa Fine Art Bar, Golden Gate Park, and 111 Minna, where she organized successful fundraisers and parties to go along with her art openings. For this show at Paxton Gate, she will be pulling out all the stops, exhibiting brand new work and organizing a toy drive for local children, so bring toys with you while you check out the artwork!
Paxton Gate's Curiosities for Kids (766 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA) Artist Opening Reception Jan 5th from 6-8 pm.
