DEC 9TH, 2016–JAN 21, 2017
1275 MINNESOTA ST / ET AL. ETC.

Reception: Friday, December 9th | 6pm - 8pm

Tyrian purple, a dye extracted from snails as early as 1570BC, ranges in hue from from dried blood to magenta. It was prized because, unlike other textile dyes which fade with exposure to light and wear, the color's brilliance increases over time. It must be seen in person.

In our separate rooms we worked to end up here together. We talk on the phone mostly about stress, emotions, sex and our eating and sleeping schedules. We each have different new faith, a product of mourning. Maybe of greater significance is our shared secretion-like working styles which bear an uncanny resemblance to the squeezing of purple mucous from a murex snail. We are close friends.

Tova Carlin's work has been shown at The Finley in Los Angeles, Bodega, Kansas Gallery, the Abrons Art Center, the Des Moines Art Center Downtown and in the Gwangju Biennale. She has performed at LA>
Lee Maida (b. 1983, Bridgeport, CT) lives and works in New York City. She holds a BFA in Textiles from California College of the Arts, Oakland and an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of Art at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. Maida has exhibited work at Andrew Kreps (NY), Derek Eller (NY), Joe Sheftel (NY) and Anne de Villepoix (Paris) most recently. She has been awarded residencies at The MacDowell Colony and Abrons Art Center.
