Prometheus, The Poem of Ecstasy

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The mercurial world of gods, demigods, and myth take center stage once again as Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins Esa-Pekka Salonen and the SF Symphony for Alexander Scriabin's Prometheus: The Poem of Fire, a work whose bright and colorful brushstrokes tell the story of the audacious Prometheus. Franz Liszt brings panache to the same tale in a tempestuous tone poem, while Jean-Philippe Rameau explores the legend of Castor and Pollux. Fang Man's Song of the Flaming Phoenix, heard here in its world premiere, blends myths of different traditions in a showcase for sheng virtuoso Wu Wei.

PROGRAM

The programming for the second half of the San Francisco Symphony's March 3-5 concerts with Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, sheng player Wu Wei, and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has changed.

Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2, performed with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Alexander Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstasy replace two works originally scheduled on the program--music from Jean-Philippe Rameau's Castor and Pollux and Scriabin's Prometheus, The Poem of Fire.

The first half of the program--Liszt's Prometheus and the world premiere of Fang Man's Song of the Flaming Phoenix (??????) for Sheng and Orchestra (a SF Symphony co-commission), featuring Wu Wei--remains unchanged.
