This is a new relief printing technique by cutting out shapes from sheets magnet as printing plates. The magnet sheets are placed on a thin sheet of steel to keep them in place. With this setup, one can employ linoleum cut, monotype and soft point technique for producing relief prints. This technique can be used in both intaglio presses as well as letterpresses. This technique allows the freedom of compositions and prints multiple colors with a single pass.
The class is divided into 5 parts:
1 General introduction of the printing technique
2 Sketch out the designs students envisioned - instructor will advice the best way to prepare the plates
3 Preparing the magnetic plate - cutting and caving into the magnetic materials.
4 Inking the plates and preparing the magnetic plate on letterpress printing bed
5 Pulling proofs
Materials Teacher Will Bring: Magnet sheets, metal base sheet
Materials for students to bring: Ink roller or brayer, Scissors, X-ACTO knife or mat knife, printing paper, printing ink (oil or rubber base), wood/linoleum carving tools
