Pouké Halpern
Delicacy

Exhibition Dates February 1 - 15, 2017
Artist Reception February 4 from 3 to 5pm

Hang Art is proud to announce Delicacy, a solo exhibition by Berkeley based artist Pouké Halpern featuring an all new body of still life paintings. Combining her eye for table top aesthetics and her passion for food, Pouké reconstructs everyday objects with whimsical compositions of shapes and word play.

Beginning each painting with text and a melange of shapes, Pouké continuously applies layers of color and markings as the under painting, which slowly reveals itself onto the foreground. Instinctively painting tabletop compositions with bottles, glasses, amphorae, jugs, and bowls, Pouké is drawn to the elegant shapes of these domestic objects.

The exhibition title Delicacy, highlights the multiple interpretations that this word suggests. The quality or state of being luxurious, the fineness, the subtleness, the refined sensibility, and state of fragility are all to be considered in Halpern's work. Not only the state of the objects themselves are to be considered, but our participation in one of the oldest traditions in history - breaking bread. Halpern calls our attention back to the table, as the modern world continues to advance faster than we can adapt.

Born and raised in Paris, France, Pouké studied interdisciplinary arts at San Francisco State University and received her M.A from the Sorbonne Unversity in Paris, France. Her art has been shown in various galleries and museums across the bay area including the Piedmont Art Center and Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. She currently lives in Berkeley and maintains a studio in neighboring Emeryville.
