PLAID

Making electronic music since 1988.

Plaid (pronounced \ˈplad\) are the London electronic music duo Andy Turner & Ed Handley. They are two of the founding members of The Black Dog, releasing their first EP in 1989 and signing to Warp Records in 1991. They have used many other pseudonyms including; Atypic, Repeats and Balil, but have focusing on Plaid since 1995. Through these various guises they have released 15 albums, from 1991's 'Mbuki Mvuki', to 2011's 'Scintilli'. They have collaborated often, with; Bob Jaroc, Mara Carlyle, Nicolette, Felix's Machines, Björk, Rahayu Supanggah, Random Dance, SARC, The London Sinfonietta and others.

Their first film score was for Studio4c's, 'Tekkonkinkreet', which won the 2008 Japanese academy prize for best animated feature. They also worked with the same director, Michael Arias, on his second live action feature 'Heaven's Door'.

Various sources claim they took their name “Plaid” from the Welsh word for “Party”.

KLANGKARUSSELL

Tobias Rieser and Adrian Held, the scruffy Austrian electronic duo behind Klangkarussell, have made more than a significant dent in the electronic music scene. They have garnered a cult following and have millions of views on YouTube. Their hit song, “Sonnentanz,” which was later remixed with lyrics as “Sonnentanz (The Sun Don’t Shine),” launched their careers, landing them a contract with Universal Music. The song reached the Top Ten in six different countries and even caught the ear of supermodel Cara Delevingne, who then performed a rendition of the track with the song’s original vocalist, Will Heard. “Will and Cara are friends,” explained Rieser. “She liked the song, so she recorded an acoustic version with Will on YouTube. I have no idea how it happened.”

Reiser and Held first met when they were in middle school in Salzburg, Austria. “We were the worst. We didn’t do well in school. We left the school and didn’t see each other for about ten years because Adrian moved to Vienna. I found him on Facebook, and we connected again when I sent him a message telling him to call me if he ever comes to Salzburg. He did, and that’s how it all started.” Their most memorable experience to date? Playing in front of 80,000 people in Zurich. “The whole city shut down. There were people everywhere I looked.”

It’s clear Reiser is still in awe of how it all happened. “We did nothing,” he began. “In 2012, we uploaded our track to SoundCloud—it was the only thing we did—all of a sudden all these other blogs reposted it. Then the song was number one on Hype Machine. Then we got a phone call from Universal. I think I still need some time to recognize what’s going on. I can’t believe I’m in New York during Fashion Week. I never expected this. It will take me years to realize all that’s happened.” And what brings the duo to New York? Painted BLACK, a three-part concert series, which begins tonight and takes place over a course of three weeks, each week focusing on a different genre of music.
