Body modification is used in traditional societies for rites of passage and spiritual rites which connect people to long-established social positions. It is also used to enhance beauty. Often individuals adorn themselves to identify with a particular group, but sometimes the purpose is to establish personal uniqueness.
In this exhibition, California Central Coast based photographer Mary Altier explores a variety of different examples of body adornment or modification. The color photographs document her in-depth exploration of this topic, accomplished over many years. The majority of the work represents the lives of individuals from indigenous groups in Ethiopia, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, and many regions of India, including Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa and Rajasthan.
Reception and exhibition viewing from 6:30-8:00 PM. Remarks by Mary Altier begin at 7:00 PM. Refreshments will be served.
The exhibition is open for complimentary viewing Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and during World Affairs programs.
