Master gilder and frame maker Peter Werkhoven discusses the art and craft of gilding and how the technique is referenced in the painting series "The 613" by Archie Rand currently on view.
"The 613" is a monumental installation by artist Archie Rand of 613 small canvas (20 in x 16 in) paintings arranged in a huge grid comprising 1700 square feet. They reflect on the 613 laws governing traditional Jewish behavior and were described by Peter Steinfels of The New York Times as, "rendered in the style of comics and pulp fiction book jackets, a dash of Mad Magazine, a spoonful of Tales from the Crypt, some grotesques, some superheroes, always action, emotion, drama." This is the first museum showing in the world of the full work.
Aedicule's Peter Werkhoven is an awarded European master gilder and frame maker, specializing in the conservation of picture frames, antique objects and historical architecture. He trained at the historic Dutch firm, Gehring & Heijdenrijk in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, under Paul Gehring, a third generation frame maker, mastering the craft of gilding and antique restoration/conservation for more than ten years before opening his atelier in San Francisco in 2003.
