Peter Kaukonen (born September 23, 1945) is an American, San Francisco bay area guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter. He is the younger brother of Jorma Kaukonen from Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna. Peter Kaukonen has played, toured, and recorded with Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, Johnny Winter, Link Wray, Terry Allen, Ruthann Friedman (author of "Windy"), as well as his own band, Black Kangaroo.
He plays both acoustic and electric guitars; acoustic and electric bass, mandolin, bouzouki, lap steel guitar and piano. His influences are Chicago and delta blues, fingerpicking guitar, new-age styled acoustic music, rock and roll, jazz and classical music.
Kaukonen's songwriting spans 40 years—from early power trio songs written for Black Kangaroo and covered by Jefferson Airplane to instrumental compositions.
His Friends Performing
Singer-songwriter and musician Nancy Hall was born and raised in
Pacifica, California. At 19 Nancy began to work as a vocalist and later a vocal arraigner
and multi-instrumentalist at many of the major recording studios
around the San Francisco Bay Area, but primarily with longtime musical
collaborator Lee Parvin at Parvin Studios in Pacifica California,
working with artists such as Taj Mahal, the late great Michael
Bloomfield, guitarist Peter Kaukonen, Randy Jackson of “American Idol”
and Vicki Randal of The Tonight Show Band, among others. Hall was
eventually hired as a vocalist with Neil Young and Crazy Horse,
touring the world with them and appearing on several CDs. Nancy has
also recorded, toured and performed with The Looters, D’Cuckoo,
Snakewalk, The Venusians, Birdz of Play and The FingerPuppets.
With Their band The Curios, she and Parvin have developed a quirky and
eclectic style of writing, singing and performing as a duo. Their
original compositions display a wide range of musical influences,
swinging from funk to rock to freak-folk and cabaret, sometimes with a
delicate, spacious, even mystical feel, taking turns with some
gospel-tinged blues or psychedelia performed variously on guitar,
piano, accordion, Hammond B3 and keys, ukulele, dulcimer, glockenspiel
and hand percussion. Their devoted following enjoy an annual December
concert that has sold out for the last 17 years, a celebration and
showcase of new music.
