Peru in San Francisco: Art, Dance, and Gastronomy at the de Young

Join us for a full day of free activities celebrating the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence and its prominent historical ties to San Francisco. Learn more about ancient Peruvian art from the Max Uhle's collection at the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, Berkeley; hear from award-winning Peruvian composer, Jimmy López Bellido; and experience a bit of Peru in San Francisco with dance performances and food tastings, highlighting the city's long history with Peruvian gastronomy and its national drink, pisco.

This program is presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Peru in San Francisco and is part of our Free Saturdays programs. The Free Saturdays initiative at the de Young creates a space where our Bay Area roots can merge with local communities through expression and creativity. Join us for free programming as we strive to build interactive and innovative experiences for all.

Schedule:

1 pm, Koret Auditorium\ Ancient Peruvian art from the Max Uhle Collection. Presentation by Christine Hastorf, director of the Archaeological Research Facility at the University of California, Berkeley
1:30 pm, Koret Auditorium\ Presentation by composer Jimmy López Bellido
2 pm, Wilsey Court\ Marinera Norteña, Peruvian traditional folk dance performance
2:30 pm, Cafe Terrace\ A Taste of Peru, free food and drink tasting (first-come, first-served basis/ limited quantities)
COVID-19 Guidance
Regardless of vaccination status, face coverings are required for staff and visitors at all times on museum premises. Masks may be temporarily removed for eating and drinking while seated in the museum or outdoors. Cleaning routines have been increased and sanitizing stations are available throughout the de Young. Learn more about our rigorous health and safety measures.

Ticket Information
All programs are free and open to the public. No admission ticket is necessary.

For programs inside Koret Auditorium, seating is limited and unassigned. FREE tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis an hour before the lecture begins in front of the Koret Auditorium. This ticket does not include admission to the museum galleries.
