An evening of classic Hawaiian music by Ka Hui Hoa and hula by Na Lei Hulu i ka Wekiu

Friday, August 1, 7pm (Show)

Featuring an exciting new trio of young Hawaiian musicians from Hawai'i island who excel in the leo ki'eki'e tradition of Hawaiian falsetto--Heua Sai-Dudoit, winner of the 20th Annual Richard Ho'opi'i Leo Ki'eki'e Falsetto Contest, Kapono Lopes, and Sean Parks.

While we are known for our innovative approach to hula and music, we also love classic Hawaiian songs made popular by such iconic musicians as Hui 'Ohana, Kahauanu Lake Trio, Mahi Beamer, Lena Machado, the Brothers Cazimero, and many more.

This is a show dedicated to "the classics"--beautiful Hawaiian songs that have stood the test of time--from the Golden Age of Hawaiian music to the Hawaiian Renaissance. We joyfully return to our roots with a young group of talented musicians who are starting their own legacy.

About LEGACY

A tribute to the decades of cultural vibrancy, artful choreography, and masculine grace that is the hallmark style of Robert Cazimero and Na Kamalei. In 1975, Robert Cazimero started an all-male hula school that revolutionized the world of hula. Challenging traditional norms and stereotypes, the gentlemen of Na Kamalei proved that men, with masculine grace, artful choreography, and contemporary storytelling, brought an entirely new and rich dimension to this ancestral art form. Join Patrick Makuakane and the men of Na Lei Hulu as they celebrate with these titans of hula in a show dedicated to the artistry of male hula.

"I became a student of Robert Cazimero in 1977, a time characterized as the Hawaiian cultural renaissance, a defining period in the revitalization of Hawaiian music and culture. Robert was an integral part of the renaissance, an extraordinary talent who uplifted Hawaiian music and hula with innovative and provocative ideas. From the moment I first saw the gentlemen of Halau Na Kamalei perform at Andrews Amphitheatre at UH Manoa, my world shifted. I instinctively knew what I witnessed on stage was how I wanted to express myself as a man, as a Native Hawaiian, and eventually, an artist."
