It’s not hard to picture Ashland, OR's Patchy Sanders sitting around the campfire, plucking away at their bluegrass-country-folk-Celtic tunes. The seven-piece aren't just bandmates, they are all either related, dating or best friends, and they play with a communal spirit that reflects their kinship. Unlike traditional string bands, where the listener can pick out each individual player, Patchy Sanders produces a wash of chords, melodies and vocal harmonies--a folk orchestra, as they describe it. The group has three principal songwriters, but everyone's fingerprints are all over every song. Regardless of the acoustic genres they bounce between, the group has a free-spirited 1967 vibe that shines through. (Aaron Carnes)
