"Passing Through" by Francine Hsu Davis and Stephanie Thwaites: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present 'Passing Through' by Francine Hsu Davis and Stephanie Thwaites. These two artists demonstrate similar working styles and sensibilities, while dealing in complimentary vantage points. Francine’s Front Door paintings put the viewer in a position of forced pause, facing a closed door and the uncertainty of entry and a limited field of vision. Stephanie’s landscapes, on the other hand, place the viewer in front of wide open spaces. The barriers to entry here are the abstract applications of paint that remind us we are looking at a carefully arranged group of paints and wax on top of a wood panel. 'Passing Through' is a collection of wonderfully creative and expressive painting techniques that remind us to look both inward and outward, to appreciate moments of pause as well as moments of inhibition. This exhibition runs from November 29th through January 15th at The Mill in San Francisco. Join us on Friday, November 30th from 6-8pm for the opening reception; drinks will be served and the artists will be in attendance.

Francine Hsu Davis was born and raised in Queens, NY. Surround by art as she grew up in New York City, she had the opportunity to engage with some of the world's greatest art institutions. While earning her undergraduate degree at Barnard College, the pull towards art led Francine to take elective studio art and art history courses. She continued her education at the Yale School of Architecture, earning a Masters of Architecture professional degree, and then returned to New York to establish herself as an architect. After building a successful practice, Francine and her family moved to Asia to travel and experience new cultures. Upon return to the US, Francine and her family settled in Oakland, where Francine established a full time painting practice, taking cues from her urban experiences, vast travel background, and love of color. Francine currently lives and paints in New York City.

Stephanie Thwaites also graduated from Yale, through the Fine Arts program where she studied painting, graphic design, and photography. She followed this experience with graduate courses in Switzerland before embarking upon a 20 year career as a graphic designer, creative director, and brand manager in Connecticut. She moved to Vermont in 2009 and returned to her fine art practice full time, participating in the local arts scene until 2014, when she and her husband relocated to Marin County. She is currently very active in the Bay Area art community, studying new techniques with local artists and with classes at the College of Marin, and showing her paintings regularly.

The Mill is a cafe and bakery that has been supporting artists with exhibitions since 2013. This exhibition is free and open to the public. The Mill is located at 736 Divisadero St., and is open from 7am until 9pm every day. Contact [email protected] and visit themillsf.com.
