Tiny, abundant, and delicate, seeds hold the promise of life. Yet seeds are complex and are often at the center of protracted legal battles. Why are seeds so controversial? What makes seeds organic? Does it matter? A panel of experts will discuss these and other questions surrounding the surprisingly political life of seeds. Maureen Wilmot, executive director of the Organic Research Farming Foundation, Santa Cruz, California, will moderate.
Speakers will be:
• Matthew Dillon, agricultural policy and programs manager at Clif Bar & Company, Emeryville, California, and director of Seed Matters, an initiative of the Clif Bar Family Foundation;
• Matthew Moore, a fourth-generation farmer and an artist whose work is included in Around the Table: food, creativity, community; and
• Don Tipping, of Seven Seeds Farm, Williams, Oregon
This panel discussion is held in conjunction with Around the Table, a Bay Area community wide festival celebrating food, art, and ideas, presented by the San Jose Museum of Art.The festival is comprised of a three part exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Art as well as a coordinated series of food oriented programming from 38 Bay Area partner organizations. The main exhibition Around the Table: food, creativity, community, explores the subject of food today through the work of 29 contemporary artists, among whom the subject has had growing importance. It revolves around three primary topics: healthful eating; food and community; and food issues.
