Owen Smith on Pulp Fiction Illustration

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Award-winning illustrator Owen Smith discusses the tradition of pulp fiction illustration and its visual influence on artist Archie Rand.

Rand's The 613 is a monumental installation currently on view of 613 small canvas (20 in x 16 in) paintings arranged in a huge grid comprising 1700 square feet. They reflect on the 613 laws governing traditional Jewish behavior and were described by Peter Steinfels of The New York Times as, "rendered in the style of comics and pulp fiction book jackets, a dash of Mad Magazine, a spoonful of Tales from the Crypt, some grotesques, some superheroes, always action, emotion, drama." This is the first museum showing in the world of the full work.

Owen Smith is an award-winning illustrator whose clients include Sports Illustrated, Time, Rolling Stone, and The New Yorker, for which he has created eighteen cover illustrations. He has recently completed illustrating his third children's book, and his cover art and interior booklet illustrations for Aimee Mann's CD The Forgotten Arm helped win a Grammy Award for Best Packaging.
